Kaizer Chiefs midfielder Mduduzi “Mdu” Shabalala has spoken out about the arm injury he suffered in a Betway Premiership match against Mamelodi Sundowns in May, which required surgery and caused him to miss the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
The 22-year-old was a regular face from his club in Bafana Bafana camps leading up to the tournament, but his dreams were dashed when he got injured just weeks before the event, ultimately missing out on what became a historic outing for the national team as they reached the second round for the very first time.
In a recent PUMA Q&A after being named the face of their South African campaign for the new ULTRA 7 boot, Shabalala expressed his disappointment yet emphasized focusing on recovery, building mental resilience, and returning stronger both as a player and person.
“It was a very difficult moment for me. I was disappointed because I had worked hard and had big goals for both my club and the national team,” Shabalala said.
“But I also knew that setbacks are part of football, so I focused on my recovery and stayed motivated, knowing my time will come again.”
When providing an update on his injury Shabalala said, “It is going well and I’m getting stronger every day.
“Mentally, this period has taught me patience, resilience, and the importance of staying positive during difficult times.
“It’s helped me grow not only as a player but also as a person, and I believe I’ll come back even stronger.”
