The Premier Soccer League (PSL) has notified all member clubs that the 2026-27 Betway Premiership season will commence earlier than usual on August 1.
Until this year, the MTN 8 has served as the curtain-raiser to the top-flight campaign, but the cup competition will now start one week later than the league on August 8.
The shift in schedule is likely an attempt to combat the congested fixture list that has become so common-place in the Betway Premiership in recent times.
Mamelodi Sundowns were forced to play their final seven matches of 2025-26 in the space of just 21 days and it derailed their title challenge as Orlando Pirates pipped them to the championship by a single point on the final day.
PSL acting CEO Mato Madlala sent out a circular on May 14 to inform all teams of the date when the new season will get underway.
“The Premier Division teams will kick off their fixtures on the weekend of the 1st of August with the Betway Premiership,” the circular read.
“MTN 8 competition will then start on the 8th of August. The Motsepe Foundation Championship will commence on the 21st of August. DStv Diski Challenge will commence on the 5th of September.”
