Stellenbosch head coach Gavin Hunt has lifted the lid on his side’s struggles this season while calling for VAR to be introduced into South African football.
The Cape Winelands side were left seething following their 1-0 loss to Golden Arrows in the Nedbank Cup Round of 16 on Saturday, particularly as they were denied a clear handball and penalty moments before the hour mark after the ball struck Ayanda Jiyane’s hand in the box before the referee called for a corner kick.
An animated Hunt was seen protesting the incident on the touchline while the Stellenbosch players waved their arms in frustration. Speaking on the referee’s decision, Hunt expressed that VAR needed to be introduced into the PSL.
“There should only have been one winner. Injustice in football exists, but hey, that’s the nature of the game,” Hunt said, as per IOL.
“You must score your goals, because at half-time it could’ve been 3-0. We have ourselves to blame, although not really.
“All the referee can say is ‘sorry’, but I don’t think they say sorry, do they? It affects livelihoods, and that’s why VAR must come in, especially in South Africa. Every week, there are controversial decisions, and it’s not even close decisions.”
