Mamelodi Sundowns head coach Miguel Cardoso admitted that his side’s inability to convert chances, combined with costly defensive errors leading to both goals, proved decisive in their shock exit against TS Galaxy.
The Rockets secured a surprise 2-0 victory in the Nedbank Cup Round of 16 at the Solomon Mahlangu Stadium on Saturday, with first-half strikes from Siphamandla Ngwenya and Junior Zindoga (from the penalty spot) eliminating Masandawana.
The heavily favoured Mamelodi Sundowns entered the Nedbank Cup Round of 16 tie buoyed by impressive recent victories over MC Alger in the CAF Champions League and Orlando Pirates in domestic action, positioning them strongly to progress to the quarter-finals. However, the Tshwane giants suffered a humbling upset at the hands of Galaxy.
“The game is clear to be analysed and to be spoken about,” Cardoso told Goal Mzansi.
“When you don’t convert the chances you had, and you let yourself make mistakes in order to be down 2-0 in a match that is played in conditions that are difficult to cope with,” he said.
“But mostly the lack of concentration in those mistakes that put you in a situation that is also difficult to recover from. There is not much more to comment,” he added.
“We can complain about the goals we didn’t score. We totally controlled the match, but here and there.
“What remains in my head is the way we suffered the goals and we let ourselves go down in a match like this is absolutely difficult to cope with.”
Sundowns will look to bounce back quickly as they head to Durban for a midweek Betway Premiership clash against AmaZulu FC on Tuesday.
