Kaizer Chiefs goalkeeper Brandon Petersen states his focus remains on producing quality performances for his club after being left out of the Bafana Bafana squad.
Petersen has enjoyed his start to the 2025/26 season, registering 11 clean sheets in 18 appearances for AmaKhosi in all competitions.
The 31-year-old was included in Bafana Bafana head coach Hugo Broos’ 54-man preliminary squad for the upcoming Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) in Morocco, but was not included in the final 25-man squad.
Broos opted to go with his tried and tested goalkeeping core of Mamelodi Sundowns’ Ronwen Williams, Orlando Pirates’ Sipho Chaine and Siwelele’s Ricardo Goss, who were in every one of Broos’ squads this year despite experimentation and rotation at other positions.
Speaking ahead of Saturday’s clash between Orlando Pirates and the Carling All-Stars, Petersen opened up about his desire to represent the national team, but maintained that his focus remains on his club duties.
“At the end of the day, yes I want to be in the national team, I want to represent my country but for me personally, my first and the most important job is at Kaizer Chiefs; they pay my salary, and that’s where I work,” Petersen said.
“I always say that the only thing I can control is my performances at club level. I can’t control what the national coach does, that is his job.
“Whether he picks me or not, I can’t complain about that. But obviously, as a footballer, I always want to be there, because that is my aim.
“But my main focus is performing at club level and try to be the best I can be,” he said.
Petersen is set to start in goal for the Carling All-Stars as they attempt to claim a third trophy in a row when facing Carling Knockout winners Orlando Pirates at the Moses Mabhida Stadium in Durban on Saturday.
