Kaizer Chiefs coach Fernando Da Cruz was not afraid to criticise his team despite their victory over Siwelele FC on Sunday.
The Amakhosi returned to winning form yesterday by defeating Siwelele 3-2 in a Betway Premiership match at the Dobsonville Stadium, featuring strikes from Mfundo Vilakazi, Wandile Duba and Faiz Abrahams (with the last credited as an own goal by goalkeeper Samukelo Xulu).
Da Cruz was unhappy with his side’s lack of control in the match, feeling that they both missed out on chances to kill the game off earlier, and also conceded too many opportunities to their opponents – arguing that they need stronger characters and leadership on the field.
“In the first half, we created a lot of chances, but we didn’t score enough and in the second half we had two chances and score two goals, so we have an issue about that. We need to work a lot on our defensive part to not give chances to the opponent,” Da Cruz told SuperSport.
The tactician added, “We created a lot of chances, but we didn’t score so after that you can make mistakes because you’re not enough killer in the two boxes as either offensively and defensively.
“We have a lack of leadership, lack of character in our defensive line, a lack of personality in our defensive line so we need to correct that and work a lot.
“For sure, we need to recover players from our defensive line but also for our offensive line. Today [Langelihle] Phili and Flavio [da Silva] was there so when everyone comes back we will have more options for the starting line-up.”
Chiefs will be back in action on Saturday 12 September when they play away to Polokwane City in their next Premiership match.
