Newly appointed Young Africans coach Manqoba Mngqithi has cited the club’s strong ambition and the chance to compete again in the CAF Champions League as the main reasons for joining the Tanzanian giants.
The former Mamelodi Sundowns and Golden Arrows tactician was officially unveiled as the new head coach on Friday, succeeding interim boss Abdihamid Moallin, who delivered another Tanzanian Premier League title.
Mngqithi faces immediate pressure to deliver continental success with the ambitious Dar es Salaam side who are hoping to go all the way and clinch their first-ever Champions League title.
“It’s always exciting. I just wanted to be back in the Champions League space and see what can happen,” the 55-year-old South African tactician said on SABC Sport.
“I’m at a club that is willing to bring in players to make sure that we achieve our objectives. It’s a very professional setup, which is very encouraging for me.
“It’s something that I’ve always looked forward to — being back in the Champions League and seeing how far I can take East African football in the competition.”
Mngqithi has a strong CAF Champions League pedigree, having won the title as assistant coach with Mamelodi Sundowns in 2016 and later helping guide them to the semi-finals in 2022.
