Bafana Bafana star Relebohile Mofokeng took a light-hearted jab at Kaizer Chiefs during his farewell dinner before joining Belgian club Royale Union Saint-Gilloise on a four-year deal.
The 21-year-old attacking midfielder declared, “I think Kaizer Chiefs will finally get a rest from me” after promising to make everyone proud, just as he did at Amakhosi’s arch-rivals. Orlando Pirates.
The comment sparked backlash from Chiefs fans on social media, forcing his mother to issue an apology.
“So, I am going to keep it short,” Mofokeng said during his farewell dinner.
“I will only say that I will make all of you proud. I will do everything I can, just like I did at Pirates. And ja, I think Kaizer Chiefs will finally get a rest from me.”
Mofokeng’s mother Naomi Mofokeng has since apologized on behalf of her son, saying he was only joking and laughing.
She also emphasized that Rele is humble and respects everyone, and adding “Askies, Makhosi. Love you so much.”
