Chippa United’s battle for Betway Premiership survival has been dealt a massive blow with the news of Stanley Nwabali’s departure from the East London-based club.
The Nigeria international was a popular figure at Chippa and established himself as his country’s first-choice goalkeeper following some outstanding displays domestically during the 2023-24 season.
Nwabali arrived in South Africa in October 2022 after a short stint with Katsina United, having previously been on the books of Lobi Stars, Enyimba, Wikki Tourists and Go Round.
The 29-year-old attracted widespread interest after helping the Super Eagles finish runners-up at the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations, but the Chilli Boys fended off interest in their star man by handing him a new contract in August 2024 and giving him the captain’s armband.
Nwabali, who had yet to feature for Vusumuzi Vilakazi’s side in the new year, kept just two clean sheets in 11 league games this term as they’ve struggled for results after going through five coaches in the opening four months.
The uncertainty surrounding the Eastern Cape outfit’s top-flight status may have led to the shot-stopper’s decision to seek greener pastures and he leaves with 80 appearances under his belt, keeping 25 clean sheets in the process.
“Chippa United Football Club confirms that Stanley Nwabali has formally submitted a request to depart the club. After careful consideration, the club has agreed to grant his release,” Chippa chairman Siviwe Mpengesi said in a statement.
“We would like to sincerely thank Stanley Nwabali for the years of service, commitment, and professionalism he has shown during his time at Chippa United Football Club.
“His contribution will always be appreciated. The club wishes Stanley every success in the next chapter of his career and in all his future endeavours.”
