Orlando Pirates head coach Abdeslam Ouaddou has cautioned that ‘people lose interest’ in the Betway Premiership if one team wins it by ’20 points.’

Mamelodi Sundowns have dominated the local top-flight, winning eight successive titles and the 2023/24 campaign saw the Tshwane giants finish 23 points clear of runners-up Pirates.

“If you want to be part of what I call a marathon, winning today is fine and I’m happy for the players,” Ouaddou told Goal Mzansi after guiding Bucs to the top of the standings with a win over AmaZulu FC.

“But the journey is still long because there are strong teams in the PSL. You have to stay humble, work hard and be professional.”

The current season sees four teams competing for the league championship midway through the campaign, with Pirates closely followed by Sundowns, Kaizer Chiefs and AmaZulu.

“It is good for PSL football to have three or four teams competing for the title. It adds value to the league and to South African football,” the Moroccan tactician added.

“When one team dominates for decades and wins the league by 20 points, people lose interest. This season is good because we have three or four teams fighting for the title.”

Ouaddou’s side will be in action on Saturday as they take on Tshakhuma Tsha Madzivhandila in the Nedbank Cup Round of 32 at the Moses Mabhida Stadium.
