Golden Arrows head coach Manqoba Mngqithi has made renewed calls for VAR to be implemented after claiming his team lost to Kaizer Chiefs on Tuesday as a result of an offside goal.
Abafana Bes’thende extended their losing streak in the Betway Premiership to four games as Aden McCarthy’s 39th-minute goal settled the contest at the FNB Stadium and lifted the Glamour Boys up to third in the standings.
However, Mngqithi insisted that McCarthy’s first senior goal for Amakhosi should not have been allowed to stand after he had strayed offside when turning home Flavio Silva’s flick-on from a free-kick.
The 54-year-old, who is in his third stint at Arrows, believes that South Africa’s top flight will continue to be plagued by bad refereeing decisions until VAR is adopted by the PSL.
“The first thing I can tell is that the PSL will forever have issues for as long as this issue of VAR is not taken care of,” Mngqithi told SuperSport TV.
“The stakes are very high. We work very hard to build our teams. If you want to see that this goal was offside, just wait for the touch that goes to Silva and already Aden McCarthy is on the other side, he’s offside.
“And we lose the game, nobody cares. You concede goals, people are saying ‘no, you conceded because you didn’t defend well’. But the reality is the league must work very hard on VAR, the game has become too dynamic.
“It’s not us, it’s the game that should tell us that it’s too difficult even for the officials to follow and track the runs of the players, because I cannot always blame the officials – the game itself has become too dynamic and it demands that we have to respond to that.
“We are not playing for R500,000 here, we are playing for R20 million. So we should consider looking into this thing of VAR otherwise we will keep losing matches like this and people will be okay with it.
“We lost another game because of an offside goal. That does not make me feel good. When we lose matches, people sing like this that they have won a match, but the reality is we won the match against the laws of the game.”
