Stellenbosch’s Ashley Cupido has received a late call-up to the Bafana Bafana squad to replace the injured Lyle Foster for South Africa’s final FIFA World Cup qualifier against Rwanda at the Mbombela Stadium on Tuesday.
The Maroons announced Cupido’s call-up on the club’s official website, stating he had been chosen as an “injury replacement”.
Burnley’s Lyle Foster started for South Africa in the nation’s 0-0 draw against Zimbabwe at the Moses Mabhida Stadium on Friday and played the full game.
He did not train with his teammates at the Mbombela Stadium on Monday ahead of Bafana Bafana’s must-win clash and was patrolling the sidelines with tape on his knee.
In order to qualify for the country’s first World Cup since hosting the tournament in 2010, South Africa need to win while Benin lose or draw to Nigeria. If Benin draw, South Africa will have to win by two goals or more unless Benin draw 3-3, in which case, South Africa must win by three or more.
Cupido last represented his nation on 10 June, where he scored in a 2-0 victory over Mozambique at the Peter Mokaba Stadium in Polokwane.
