Gayton Mckenzie has revealed that a decision regarding Video Assistant Referees in the PSL will be made soon.
As one of the biggest talking points in South African football at the moment, South African Minister of Sports, Arts and Culture Gayton McKenzie expressed that an announcement regarding the high-tech officiating system will be made in the coming week.
VAR has become a staple in refereeing in football leagues around the world, while the PSL are yet to make advancements in the technological side of the game.
Over the last couple of months, players, coaches, fans and pundits have campaigned for VAR to be introduced into the PSL, citing a number of dubious calls made by referees using only the naked eye.
Speaking after the Soweto Derby, a game that came with refereeing controversy in itself, McKenzie expressed that a decision on VAR will be made soon.
“Congratulations Orlando Pirates, congratulations to PSL and supporters of both clubs. VAR announcement shall be made within 7 days,” McKenzie wrote on social media, as per the South African.
The publication also mentioned that McKenzie promised that VAR technology would be integrated into South African football by April 2025, a pledge that was unfulfilled.
It remains to be seen what decision PSL authorities will make regarding the issue, while officiating continues to be a major topic of discussion in the local game.
