Kaizer Chiefs co-coach Cedric Kaze has highlighted how the build-up to the Soweto Derby has injected a fresh surge of energy into the team, despite their recent setbacks.
Amakhosi head into Saturday’s high-stakes clash against Orlando Pirates on the back of consecutive 2-1 defeats to Stellenbosch FC in the Betway Premiership and Egyptian side Zamalek in the CAF Confederation Cup.
Nevertheless, Kaze emphasised the strong commitment displayed by every player during training sessions as they push to secure starting spots and turn their form around for the iconic fixture.
“We would love to see the players show the same level of commitment every week, but I have to admit it’s different now. They give you more,” Kaze told Goal Mzansi.
“Everyone wants to play and be part of this game. It’s a natural human reaction. It happens two or sometimes more times a year, but that’s why we have to reduce the intensity in training because tackles are flying and players are going all in.
“Sometimes you have to calm the excitement leading up to the derby. Fortunately, we have experienced players who approach it as business as usual.”
A victory over Pirates at FNB Stadium would see fourth-placed Chiefs close the gap on joint log leaders Pirates and Mamelodi Sundowns, as they are 8 points clear of Amakhosi in the leaue standings.
