Kaizer Chiefs were the only South African team to lose in CAF interclub competition at the weekend, while Mamelodi Sundowns and Stellenbosch both claimed wins.
Chiefs fell 2-1 to Al Masry in their CAF Confederations Cup group stage opener at the Suez Stadium on Sunday evening, while Stellenbosch claimed a 1-0 win over AS Otohô at the New Peter Mokaba Stadium in Polokwane on Sunday.
In the CAF Champions League, Sundowns began their campaign with a 3-1 win over Saint-Éloi Lupopo at Loftus Versfeld in Pretoria on Saturday.
The Phefeni Glamour Boys conceded in the 59th minute from the penalty spot as Bonheur Mugisha converted to hand Al Masry the lead.
Dillon Solomons pulled AmaKhosi level in the 66th minute, but an 87th minute strike from Mohamed Hashem sealed a late win for the home side.
Stellenbosch also won in dramatic fashion, as Ashley Cupido scored in the third minute of stoppage time to hand the Maroons a victory to start their second continental campaign.
Sundowns claimed an early lead at Loftus, with Portuguese midfielder Nuno Santos finding the back of the net in the fourth minute.
However, Lupopo struck back before half-time as Wanet Kashala capitalised on a loss of focus from Sundowns, scoring in the 44th minute.
Masandawana turned up the heat in the second half as Marcelo Allende (61’) added his name to the score sheet before Santos netted his second of the game in the 77th minute.
All three sides will return to action in the Confederations Cup and Champions League this weekend, as Chiefs look to get their first point on the board.
