South Africa head coach Hugo Broos was unimpressed despite the team’s victory over Zambia in Saturday’s international friendly.
Goals from Oswin Appollis, Mohau Nkota and Sphephelo Sithole earned Bafana Bafana a 3-1 win over Chipolopolo at the Nelson Mandela Bay Stadium in Gqeberha.
The game was part of Bafana’s preparations for the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) finals in Morocco and Broos believes his team could have done better.
“We didn’t play our game today. There were good moments, moments when we did what we had to do – the forward passes that made us dangerous and that’s how we scored,” Broos told the media
“Mohau (Nkota, who came on at half-time and scored the second goal) was very aggressive and very quick. We didn’t do that enough today. We were a little soft.
“The tempo was not high at certain moments; it was not high enough. But that’s how it goes and it is better that it happened today and not at the finals,” the 73-year-old Belgian added.
“During the preparations in December, we will be able to work more on that.”
It was Bafana’s only friendly in the current international window, and Broos’ side will head into camp next month ahead of the AFCON tournament.
South Africa are in Group B, and they will face Angola (December 22), Egypt (December 26) and Zimbabwe (December 29).
