The managerial merry-go-round at Chippa United continues to turn after Vusumuzi Vilakazi returned to the club as Luc Eymael’s successor this week.
Eymael was sacked on Wednesday as trigger-happy Chilli Boys owner Chippa Mpengesi lost patience with the Belgian, who won just one of his six Betway Premiership matches at the helm.
A 2-1 defeat to Marumo Gallants on October 19 extended Chippa’s winless run in the league to four games and Eymael departed with the team rock-bottom in the standings, three points adrift of safety.
The East London outfit started the season with Sinethemba Badela at the helm, but he lasted just two matches before being replaced Musa Nyatama, who quickly made way for Morgan Mammila, only for Eymael to take from him at the end of a turbulent August.
Vilakazi is at least familiar with the surroundings, having been appointed as technical director in September 2023 and also served as assistant coach before quitting his role two months later.
The 43-year-old vacated his post at Kruger United to roll the dice in Gqeberha, guiding them to eighth in the Motsepe Foundation Championship after seven games.
“We are pleased to welcome back ‘Kanu’ Vilakazi as the new Head Coach,” Chippa sporting director Sinesipho Mali said in a statement.
“Familiar with our Club’s values and ambitions, he is well-placed to lead us forward in the Betway Premiership League.”
Vilakazi will kick off his tenure with a home encounter against AmaZulu at the Buffalo City Stadium on November 1.
