According to reports in the South African football fraternity, FIFA have now opened disciplinary proceedings against the South African Football Association and Teboho Mokoena.
Currently sitting at the top of Group C in their bid to qualify for the upcoming FIFA World Cup, Bafana Bafana could hit a snag in their attempt to feature at the showpiece for the first time since 2010.
Mokoena was played while ‘under suspension’ during their World Cup qualifier against Lesotho in March, after he picked up yellow cards against Benin and Zimbabwe in prior qualifying assignments, which ought to have triggered a one-match ban.
The report mentions that the case will be directed to the FIFA Disciplinary Committee, while SAFA and Mokoena will have six days to lodge a response.
Bafana now run the risk of forfeiting their result against Lesotho, which would see their opponents record a 3-0 win on paper. South Africa could also face other sanctions that include fines and suspensions.
The above-mentioned result would mean that South Africa would have to win both of their last two Group C encounters, with the hope of Benin dropping points against Rwanda and Nigeria.
