Outgoing Bafana Bafana head coach Hugo Broos has expressed pride in what his team achieved during his five years at the helm.<\/p>\n
Broos is set to retire following South Africa’s exit from the 2026 World Cup after they lost 1-0 to co-hosts Canada in the round of 32 at the SoFi Stadium in Inglewood, California on Sunday.<\/p>\n
Stephen Eustaquio broke South African hearts when he scored the winning goal in the second minute of stoppage time, although the Reds deserved their victory after creating the majority of the chances.<\/p>\n
Broos looked back on his tenure with fondness, having guided the national team to third place at the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations and reaching the knockout stages of the global showpiece for the first time in the country’s history.<\/p>\n
“Until now, I think it was a fantastic journey, ok it started a little bit difficult. After that, I think we did a very good job, also the players,” the Belgian tactician told SABC Sport.<\/p>\n
“I’m still proud of this team what they achieved in the last five years so again we think we can look at the past with happiness.<\/p>\n
“Be happy because we were at every big tournament, we have a (Africa Cup of Nations) bronze medal, we were in the second round now it never happened.<\/p>\n
“So, I think the last five years was successful and now it’s up to me to put everything and see what I will decide in the next days or next weeks.”<\/p>\n
Broos stated his successor and coaches back home must start utilising speed and power from players after Bafana were undone in that department by Canada.<\/p>\n
“This is certainly … you receive a goal on the moment that the game is finished, it was two-three minutes to play. It’s done in that moment and for Canada it was the right moment also to score,” he added.<\/p>\n
“On the other side, we have to be honest today there was more speed and power in our opponent. We lost many duels, certainly man-against-man duels because of the power.<\/p>\n
“This is something I think we have to work in the next months – not only we but also all of the South African football.<\/p>\n
“That it is not anymore playing tiki-taka it’s also the power and speed you need. I think we have an example of that today from our opponents.”<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
